Today, 49 Shades of Grey represents abandoned subdivisions in 49 States paired with each image’s average grayscale and “Sept. 15, 2008”—the date of global economic collapse and a reference to On Kawara’s “date” paintings. Installation includes an empty space for Hawaii which is represented in a related work entitled Aloha.
