Pizza the Polar Bear Lives Inside a Display Case Inside a Luxury Shopping Mall in Southern China
Jeremy Drummond & Allison Titus 9:50 Minutes, Color/Sound, 4K, 2026 Pizza the Polar Bear Lives Inside a Display Case Inside a Luxury Shopping Mall in Southern China is interested, among other things, in spectacle—what is held apart for us to view and to be enthralled by, and how we attempt to capture it or hold it captive. It references a video posted on New York Times online about a polar bear named Pizza, known as “the world’s saddest polar bear,” who lived in an aquarium at the Grandview Mall in Guangzhou. Animal welfare activists called for Pizza to be relocated to a natural environment; as of 2018, Pizza was reportedly living in a marine park where he was reunited with his parents. -- In 2025, Jeremy Drummond and Allison Titus established a collaborative practice to engage and explore their mutual interests in art, poetry, and experimental film. Their first short film, Pizza the Polar Bear Lives Inside a Display Case Inside a Luxury Shopping Mall in Southern China, was completed in September 2026.
